The 9th Annual Vancouver Island Hide-&-Go Cache

IT’S HIDE AND GO CACHE TIME

All through January we’ll hide amazing caches, and all through February we’ll hunt amazing caches. Winter?? Bye-bye. The wrap-up Bash begins at 5:30, on Saturday March 2nd, and whether or not you’ve hidden a HAG cache this year, you’ll be very welcome, as long as you’re old enough to be in a pub.

This is the ninth annual HAG and this years theme is SUPER NATURAL, (or Supernatural or Turn Us A Pearl or whatever). Hope you have fun with that.

Please note there are some new rules that you’ll need to follow this year when submitting your caches for the event, listed under “GUIDELINES” below. If you don’t follow these simple steps, your cache will be sent back to you by the reviewers!

This is how the HAG plays out…

1) HAG hides may be submitted for review any time AFTER Jan 2nd (60 days before the wrap-up Event) and BEFORE Thursday, January 31st. Please feel free to place hides anywhere on Vancouver Island, or on any other of our lovely Gulf Islands. And PLEASE, for the Reviewers’ sakes, send your caches for review as early as possible. The Reviewers need time to be sure all the caches are following the rules.

2) All the qualified caches that are presented for publication in time will be published by our wonderful Reviewers on Saturday, February 2nd…and if you’ve never experienced 100+ caches suddenly scrolling into your e-mail, then welcome to the HAG!

3) The caches are published and the caching begins!!

4) The cut-off for your finds to count towards a Trophy will be February 28th at midnight. Don’t worry; the caches will be available for finding for years; the cut-off is just for trophy hunters. And finally,

5) We have the wind-up Bash at the 6-Mile Pub. Time to swap stories, present lovely and tasteful trophies, and generally have a high old time. If you’re able to make it to the Bash, it’s important that you log a “Will Attend” on the Event page, and mention how many of you are coming, so the pub can provide for everyone.

GUIDELINES

PLEASE PUT HAG9 at the END of the cache name. Having it in the name helps the reviewers, but having it at the beginning makes for confusion on your GPS

DO REMEMBER to include a “note to reviewer” (bottom of your hide-a-cache page) saying that “This is a HAG9 cache. Please publish on Saturday, Feb 2nd.”

DO LIST your hides on the VIGPS forum.

ATTENTION TROPHY HUNTERS
This year there are TEN TASTEFUL TROPHIES. Night Cache; Evil Cache; Best Log; Best Puzzle; Most Hides; Best Multi; Most Finds; Most FTFs; the Pyramid; and new this year, a Best Trail Series Trophy and a Best Camo Trophy.

DO REMEMBER that there will be no FTFs recognised that were found before the caches’ publication. Don’t jump the gun.

If you decide to hunt in a group (for example, if Cache Crop and Amandazon were to join up as CropAzon to do HAG caching) be aware that only ONE caching account is entitled to the FTF..please be clear in your log exactly which cacher found the cache first.

AND if you’re caching as a team and going for, say, the Most Finds Trophy, you must stay together and ALL go to each cache

HAVE A TON OF SUPERNATURAL FUN

The 8th Annual Vancouver Island Hide-&-Go Cache

Here it is! – The 8th Annual Vancouver Island Hide & Go! “Weird and Wonderful”
There are 3 steps to this event. The Hide, The Go, The Event.

The Hide
The hide dates this year are starting today – January 1st until February 3rd at midnight– so what are you waiting for go hide some caches!!!!

This years’ theme is “Weird and Wonderful” – have fun and be creative.

As with previous years, micros are allowed as part of this event.

We would like to see the same type of caches hidden that you like to find – mind-bending puzzles, ingeniously camouflaged urban micros, Lock & Locks in the woods, caches large enough for your trade items, etc.

There are elegant and tasteful trophies for Most Hides, Most Finds, Most FTFs, Greatest Log, Best Puzzle or Multi, and the Pyramid trophy, AKA the HAG Committee’s Outstanding-in-the-field Award and a new surprise award!

You must abide by the geocaching.com cache placement guidelines when hiding your cache. Keep in mind that your hide must be at least 161 meters from another cache. When submitting a multi or puzzle cache, include the waypoints to speed up the approval process. Be nice to Scootch and The Wizard of Ooze!

After submitting your caches, please post a note in the vigps.com forums to indicate the name of the cache. On the cache page, please state that this cache was hidden as part of the Hide & Go or HAG. Please also include a reviewer note reminding Scootch or The Wizard of Ooze not to publish it until Feb 4th.

Once you have hidden your caches please list them on VIGPS.com

The Go
As the caches start to appear on geocaching.com, go out and find them! The new caches will be listed on VIGPS.com as they are hidden. Even if a name might give the location away you can not claim FTF unless you find and log it AFTER it has been published.

To qualify for the Most FTFs trophy, you must hide at least one cache. A couple years ago we had a few cases where a group wanted to be listed as FTF. To avoid confusion and squabbles, only one recognized cacher will be listed as the First finder.

But it’s not all about FTFs – just think about all the fresh air and exercise you will be getting by going out and finding all these new caches!

The Event
The Hide & Go event will be held at 5:30pm on Saturday March 3rd (At the Six Mile Pub). The event is to hand out prizes and chat about our hides and finds. You are welcome to attend the event even if you haven’t hidden any caches. The event is listed at geocaching.com – GC380T1

Cachers Haven – Thursday March 25th 2010

Curious George is visiting Victoria so we’re having an event!

Unfortunately, geocaching.com would not list this as an event due to the short notice, but we wanted to honour this legendary cacher so we’re having one anyway. :-)

Hecklers, starting at 7pm on the Thursday the 25th.

Hecklers (we’re meeting upstairs)
123 Gorge Road East
(Ramada Hotel)

Drop in to say hello to the legendary cacher Curious George, swap stories with your fellow cachers, and enjoy a beverage or two. Please pass this information on to your caching friends…it’s hard to get the word out without it being a geocaching.com event.
