Rev up those engines..... The ‘MULTIPLE MISERY’ Contest
(Including #’s 453053 & 453067)
Sponsored by The Team
January 18th, 2007
Determine the UTM’s of the following in WGS 84. Positions 1-5 (below) are on Vancouver Island!
1) UTM of Robert S. Falcon grave (Greater Duncan general area)
____________E & _____________N.
2) UTM of Walter Duck grave (Saanich Penninsula area)
____________E &_____________N.
3) UTM position of the Robert W. Service memorial chair
____________E & _____________N.
4) UTM of 4 digit number stamped into yellow concrete in the vicinity of the
Mill Bay ferry pier ____________E & ____________N.
5) UTM of the words “Canada 3 Tonne Cap” on an object in the Deep Bay area.
(There’s more than one Deep Bay on Vancouver Island).
From each of the above 5 locations, determine the distance in kilometers to 6 digits accuracy to UTM 10U 385012/5486504. There you will find 2 GPS tags nailed to a tree. If the tags are missing, then contact us at TheTeam@shaw.ca. We will require a photo of this tree, and the photo must be taken LOOKING SOUTH! (There’s no point in removing the tags, as we have a solution around this problem.)
If the tags ARE there, what are the tag numbers? ________&________
Total up the 5 distances you determined (in kilometers) to 6 digits accuracy.
That total is __________ kilometers.
Add this total to 1189.075758 km, and travel on a bearing of 129 deg. 08 min. 31.4742 sec.
Here you will find hidden under a large rock, a bottle containing a note with further instructions.
There’s lots of excitement here! Old mining cabins, graves, abandoned machinery and high altitude action. 4WD/snowmobiles/widetrack ATV’s and snowshoes suggested.
Survival gear, satellite phone, emergency supplies, a must. Let other’s know where you are going. Part of this contest is in very remote and high altitude country. You are responsible for your own safety and well being. You are responsible for payments to any operatives.
This is not a contest for the proverbial couch potato. If you want high adventure – this is it! This contest is split between Canada and the USA. If you think you’re up to it, proceed. Otherwise turn up the heat, turn on the ‘telly’ and wait for the exciting stories.
We strongly recommend a very powerful spotting scope for this fantastic adventure.
Years from now, you’ll be telling your grandchildren that you survived the ‘Multiple Misery Contest!
This contest pays $2,000 Cdn to the first team/individual to complete it, and the payout will occur after the photos are posted on vigps.com and all other requirements and questions are answered correctly. Photos are required at all locations.
Copy all information on notes you find and replace the note in the container. Please re- hide all containers and steel bars as found.
This contest will end March 21st, 2007 at 6:00PM.
BUT WAIT!!!! IT’S NOT OVER YET! THERE’S MORE MISERY AHEAD….
That note in the bottle you’ve checked out (above) among other things, asked you about a distant ‘object’. Determine the UTM of this object. __________E and _________N
There’s a GPS tag attached somewhere on this object. What is the tag #? __________
So far, so good – it’s important we keep you in good shape!
From the object you sighted on (Page 453053 of this contest), proceed 334.883343 kms at 104 deg. 11 min. 11.7414 sec. True. There you will find a bottle with a note in it, hidden under a rock ledge. There’s an + carved in the rock above this ledge as a reference. This will be bottle sheet #453067. You will be required to go to 3 different locations and find GPS tags. Total these 3 tag #’s = ________, and call this number kilometers.
From the UTM of the 3rd question on sheet #453067, follow a compass course of 329 deg. 14 min. 35.7096 sec. for the total of the 3 GPS tag #’s on bottle sheet #453067 = _______, less 3022.851649. Call this number kilometers = __________.
This should put you at a place where an event happened a long time ago.
What was the event? _________ (Hint: the initials A.D. are associated with this)
No whining please, no asking for hints, no “there’s snow on the ground”, or “I wish I was home with my dog” comments. If you attempt this contest, you’re a professional!
Let ‘The Toads’ be your inspiration. In a recent contest they smashed up one of their vehicles in a solo accident – bruised, bloodied and shaken they wrote us to say “We’ll be better in no time and other teams will be eating our dust”! This type of attitude is why ‘The Amazing Toads’ are geocaching legends in the American Southwest.
